I think it is somewhat natural to go through periods of overconfident "I'm the best!!!" feelings as a rider. That's generally when Old Dobbin decides to throw a hearty buck and bring you down a few pegs. At least in my experience, horses will keep you humble in the long run, no matter how fancy pants you think you are in the short term.

But also I think giving your horse the ride it needs is a fine line and a difficult one to walk. You might have goals for your horse that end up not working out. Or it's just as easy to get distracted and try to focus on too many things when riding a not-so-perfect horse, and then not do well at any one particular thing. So don't be so down on yourself...these are not easy things to impart if the person isn't receptive to the idea.

could it be the nature of equitation riding that produces the mindset you are trying to overcome with your students? it seems that type of riding helps to create more of a "form over function" type of riding. We all know people who ride beautifully and get the most from their horse who would never pass for an eq rider. and conversely, the eq. riders who cannot ride a horse outside of an arena or falls apart if the horse acts up.

Never fear if you do not succeed there will be some egg-beater gaited, fast paced spotted, wide eyed red haired spooking, up-hill rearing four legged animal who will "hit the point home" so to speak in one way or another. I personally can say every time I get a little big headed my yellow horse loves to put me in my place (which hopefully is on soft ground). A great horse can put a rider in their place. A good rider can accept this and thank the horse. A great rider can dust off their pants, get back on, and thank their horse.
